When beautiful Maria, the novel's gently observant heroine, falls in love with Tonio, a charming 16-year-old, she awakens to a larger world that includes the great and the famous, as well as the mysterious and malevolent. The wealthy but enigmatic Padrone reaches out to Maria, and she learns secrets he has kept to himself for decades. Beset by an early grief and conflicting ideas of how she should live her adult life, Maria embarks on a journey that will take her far from her native hilltop town of Noepoli, to the new world.
History and romance interweave in this historical novel that seems to have a delicious twist in every chapter.
